Nike Indoor Nationals, Reggie Lewis Center, Boston, MA, 3/14-15/09 ... NEW 3/21/09
Nothing like good competition to bring out the best and the 2009 Nike Indoor Nationals was the place for Arkansas athletes. McKinley Rea (Conway) cleared a personal best 11' 8..50" in the GPV for 14th to improve her state leading mark.  Not to be outdone was Daniel Reese (Genoa Central) who upped his best to 15' 2.25" in the BPV and an 8th place finish. Sam Ewing (Lake Hamilton) did not improve on his state leading mark of 16' 4" but was a solid 15' 8.25" for 3rd overall in the  BPV.  Cameron Efurd (Rogers) just missed being seeded in the "fast" section of the mile but nevertheless ran a sterling 4:16.19 to win his section and take 8th overall. Efurd's mark converts to a 4:14.70 for 1600m which is the state's all-time best indoors and 4th best all-time for indoor and outdoor.

Class 5-6-7 Boys State Indoor, Tyson Track Center, Fayetteville, 2/28/09 ... NEW 3/11/09
Rogers (7A-W) took the next step to another Triple Crown with a too close for comfort 78-67-53.50 win over Lake Hamilton (6A-S) and Conway (7A-C) in the 28-team meet.  With six running events remaining the three teams were knotted up within 2-3 points with each team having firepower left.  Rogers surged ahead with 15 points in the 1600m and added a bit in the 800m then put it away with the 3200m. Lake Hamilton won the final event but it was too little too late.  Cameron Efurd (Rogers) scored 28 with a double win in the 800m and 1600m (4:27) and runner-up to Markus Pearson (Conway) in the 3200m (9:47). Efurd won a hot 800m by 1:56..83 to 1:57.88 over Larry Adkinson (Hot Springs, 5A-SW). Micah Washington (Ft Smith Southside) tallied 26 with a win in the HJ at an impressive 6' 10.5" mark and a pair of 2nds in the LJ and TJ. Washington's HJ effort qualifies for the Arkansas All-Time Best List. Ethan Turpen (Lake Hamilton) put up 21.5 points in four events showing versatility with points in the HJ, LJ, 800m and 4 x400m. While Rogers put their distance strength to good use, they added valuable points with a pair of wins in the HJ (Joseph Berroa, 22' 3.75") and the SP (Zac Lane, 52' 10").  Other top marks included Tauron Dunn (Magnolia, 5A-SW) in the TJ (45' 6.5"). Sam Ewing (Lake Hamilton) put in the mark of the day with an exceptional PV mark at 16' 4" with Ryan Kotich (Conway) in 2nd at a nice 15' 6". Ewing's mark makes the Top 15 on the ATB List while Kotich's mark earned a Top 30 ATB List rank. Click here for complete meet results.

Class 5-6-7 Girls State Indoor,Tyson Track Center, Fayetteville, 2/28/09.... NEW 3/9/09
Bentonville (7A-W) put in a solid distance and sprints perfromance then sprinkled a few field event points on top to take a convincing 105-77-34 win over Fayetteville (7A-W) and Bryant (7A-C) in the 23-team meet. The Lady Tigers scored in all but three events winning both relays along the way.  Caroline McCombs (Fayetteville) led all scorers with 38 including a triple win in the LJ, TJ and 200m. Teammate Jessica Potter (Fayetteville) accumulated 27.25 points in six events with a win in the HJ. Jeanna Sheppard (Bentonville) scored 26.5 and also achieved a double win in the 60m hurdles and 400m. McKinley Rea (Conway, 7A-C) won the PV with an excellent 11' 6" mark while McCombs streaked to a 26.90 clocking for the 200m win. Valerie Reina (Springdale Har-Ber, 7A-W) won an impressive 1600m and 3200m double in two exciting races. In the 1600m, Reina edged out Katie Dalton (Bentonville) 5:12.50-5:14.26, both good for the Arkansas All-Time Best List. Yet the 3200m was even a closer fast race as Reina nipped Dalton and Erika Setzler (Conway) by 11:30.64-11:31.33-11:33.17, again all new marks on the ATB List.  Click here for complete meet results.

Class 1-2-3-4 Boys State Indoor, Tyson Track Center, Fayetteville, 2/27/09....   NEW 3/8/09

DeQueen (4A-7) cruised to a 112-46-37 win over England (3A-1) and conference rival Nashville in the 25-team meet.  The Leopards used solid scoring in each the field events, distances and sprints and scored  in all but two events for the win.  England led Nashville by only 28-27 with five events remaining and used 13 unanswered points in the 800m, 200m and 3200m to put the Scrappers away. Caleb Cross (Newport, 4A-3) was a triple winner in the 60m hurdles, 400m and 200m to take the high point award at 30. Andrew Evans (Shiloh Christian, (4A-1) took the double distance win in the 1600m and 3200m. Daniel Reese (Genoa Central, (3A-7) won the PV in a nice 15' 0" while Cross won the 60mh in 8.08. Class 1-2-3-4 Girls State Indoor, Tyson Track Center, Fayetteville, 2/27/09 .... NEW 3/7/09

Mansfield (3A) put on a show with points in all but one event to romp to a 162.50--60.5-54.75 win over Waldron (4A) and Gravette (4A) in the 22-team meet. In fact, Mansfield needed only the 60m hurdles (1-2-3 finish for 24 points), PV (21.5 points) and 200m (18 points) to score enough to win the meet. Clara Ellingburg led Mansfield with 34 points with wins in the 60m, 200m and 400m while teammates Jessica Otto added 27.5 and Emily Welden tallied 23.5.  Shelby Newell (Gravette) was 2nd highest scorer with 27 including double wins in the LJ and TJ.  Other double winners were Otto (HJ and 60m hurdle) and Emily Carroll (Melbourne, 2A) in the 1600/3200m.  Click here for

6A Lake Hamilton took a slim 64-60 lead into the final two events in hopes of holding off 7A Rogers but could not stop the stampede as the Mounties outscored the Wolves 18-6 in the 3200m run, not unexpected for the 7-time 7A state cross country champions,  and then pushed the margin out further with a 2nd place finish.  Bentonville Girls showed off a balanced scoring attack with 31 field event points, 32.5 sprint points and a strong 54 in the distances. For article and partial results click here.
